It’s no secret that I love sites like Groupon and Living Social. So when a deal came up that included 10 fitness classes including Pilates at a ballet center, I jumped on it. I intended to take only the Pilates classes, then I started thinking… wouldn’t knowing some ballet moves help my Pilates practice? It’s always a little frustrating to take a class from a former dancer who expects all of her students to have the same background. So I bought myself a pair of ballet slippers and enrolled in my first intro to ballet class last night.

Sunscreen Media Event

I recently went to a work event that I need to share. It was for L’Oreal & La Rosh Posay, a company that specializes in sunscreens from France. There was a presentation and then we were invited to get screen checks. During the presentation, a dermatologist talked about how dangerous the sun is for humans. She had some great statistics. One out of 5 Americans will get skin cancer. Can you believe that? And the quickest growing group of people getting skin cancer are adults 25 – 29. Of course they say the most important thing is to wear sunscreen on all exposed skin – every day and avoid tanning beds (Kyla, I’m talking to you). Also pay attention to the moles on your body. Beef – I’ve missed you!

My cleanse was officially over yesterday morning, so Ray and I went out for burgers and fries last night (naturally!). We decided to try 5 Napkin Burger’s new location on the Upper West Side. Since it was our first time there, we decided to go for the namesake dish, the 5 Napkin Burger. It came with caramelized onions, Gruyere, and rosemary aioli. Let me tell you, it was a little slice of heaven. I finished every bite of the burger. I’m usually not a fan of onions, but decided to try them. It was actually really good. The fries weren’t anything to write about, but I didn’t care. All I was interested in were the burger. The restaurant is pretty fancy for a burger joint and has an interesting list of cocktails. The first drink I picked was made with red wine. I asked our server if it was a good drink and she told me no! I’ve never had that happen before, but was glad she did. She said the wine cocktails are made with boxed wine and really not that special. So I picked a drink with sake and jalapeno. It was spicy and unique. Not sure if I’d get it again, but it wasn’t bad.

 

I’m still feeling really good after my cleanse, and don’t plan on eating like this often. But it was a great treat!

 

Winter Cleanse

After having a conversation with Ray last night, I think I’m going to try to blog more. I do have some things of note going on with my life, so I’m going to try to share them more here.

Over the past 2 1/2 weeks, I’ve been doing an herbal cleanse. The entire program lasts 4 weeks. Last year I did a juice cleanse for 3 days, but this year I wanted to try this cleanse by Blessed Herbs. The acupuncture center that I have been going to and working with is doing the cleanse also and invited patients to cleanse along with them. They blog every week about the benefits. It’s nice to know what I’m getting into as well as staying motivated.

It is a 4-part program that includes dietary restrictions and lots of herbs taken before each meal. The first week was the colon cleanse. That was about as pleasant as it sounds. You have to drink a “toxin absorber” 5 times a day and stick to an all vegetarian, liquid if possible diet. I came to affectionately refer to the toxin absorber as sludge. You mix it with a glass of fruit juice and drink up. The point is remove “mucoid plaque.” Let’s just say I was glad when that portion of the cleanse was over.

The next week was a liver and intestine cleanse. The diet for that portion was vegetarian with only a little meat and otherwise very healthy. No alcohol, dairy or caffeine among other things. It was so much better than the colon cleanse that I hardly minded the dietary restrictions. Thankfully I didn’t find any parasites, which can happen during this part of the cleanse.

Today I started the lung and kidney cleanse. I have to take liquid and pill herbs 3-4 times a day and maintain a sensible diet. I’m still severely limiting meat, no beef and cutting out 95% of diary. It actually hasn’t been all that hard to maintain this diet. Ray is supportive and when we go out, we make sure to go to a restaurant with some vegan options which isn’t hard to do in New York. I also found a couple recipes on the Whole Foods recipe app for my iPhone and last night made a delicious quinoa dish. Finally today I became a little tired of the limitations, but I keep telling myself, only 1 1/2 weeks left. I definitely feel better… less bloated, more energy and happier. I like doing a cleanse during this time of year. I had put on a number of pounds since the wedding and was feeling a little sluggish. I feel like it’s a way to pre-spring clean my body.

 


Acupuncture

Those of you who know me know that I’m terribly scared of needles and shots. So it might come as some surprise to hear that I tried acupuncture last week. I’ve always been fascinated with this type of Chinese medicine, but have never been brave enough to try it. Well, I interviewed a wonderful acupuncturist named Jill Blakeway for a story I am producing. She runs the Yin Ova center in NYC. After watching someone get needled while shooting the story, I decided to try it. My back has been very tight recently, and not even back massages were helping. I met with Jill for a full consultation and treatment. After a couple dozen questions about my lifestyle and symptoms, she said, like many New York City women, I am a pressure cooker for stress. Someone who holds everything inside, and my Qi (said: chee) was all blocked up. So Jill recommending some acupuncture and Chinese herbs. She said she was going to put the needles in my back then in my front. Surprisingly, I couldn’t even feel the needles going into my back. It just felt like someone tapped on me. She inserted around 6 needles and let me lay quietly for 5 minutes. I swear I could feel my back relax while lying in the peaceful room. Jill put some theraputic oil on one of my more problem muscles. It felt great. Next, she had me flip over onto my front and inserted needles into my feet, ankles, hands and my right ear. I was a little more apprehensive about this side probably because I could see what was going on, but again I could hardly feel the needles. Jill sent me off with some Chinese herbs and told me to come back after she returned from a vacation. To my surprise, I slept like a baby that night, and woke up the next morning feeling fantastic. The one huge knot on my back is significantly reduced the way no massage has been able to help. Jill’s clinic is for women and children and she treats a variety of conditions ranging from acne to fertility issues. I never would have thought to try acupuncture for my tense back, but I’m sure glad I did.
