Losing it with Michael Pollan

My whole life I have struggled with my weight. Like most people I tried everything from counting calories to fad diets. Then last Christmas, I received Michael Pollan’s “Food Rules”. When I first flipped through, I didn’t know what to expect, but I liked that each page/rule was short and easy to read. It did not take long to finish, and I actually enjoyed it. The rules just made sense.

I am a college student and when I got back to school after Christmas break I decided to follow these rules. I didn’t do it to lose weight, I did it because I wanted to live a healthier lifestyle. At first it was hard to follow because it is a complete eating change. Since I am a college student I eat a lot of frozen dinners, dollar menu items and ramen noodles. Anything that is convenient, fast and cheap. Following the food rules had me eating way more veggies and less meat. I shopped more on the perimeter of the grocery store then in the middle sections (which is Rule #12). Some of my favorite things to eat were green beans drizzled with olive oil and Mrs. Dash, also boiled or roasted potatoes with garlic powder.

Some of the rules were harder for me to follow like Rule #14 “Eat foods made from ingredients that you can picture in their raw state or growing in nature” and Rule #20, “It’s not food if it arrived through the window of your car.” After about a week of following the rules, my body felt more energized less sluggish and I even lost a pound! I decided to continue with the rules and started to exercise a few times a week. After four months of following the rules and occasionally exercising I lost 26 pounds and felt great. I’m still down 26 pounds and follow the rules, though not as actively as I did for the first four months.
